A View from the Handlebars: The Freedom of Cycling

Back on Saturday 18 September, CycHull and Hull Friends of the Earth joined forces to put on a city ride, investigating some of the low-traffic and traffic-free routes across the city.

First - thank you to all those who showed up! I was blown away with the fact we had 25+ people join us throughout the day! The enthusiasm on the day, and the comments about the route cemented in our thinking the value of pushing the development of these ‘quiet routes’ with the council.

Second - thank you to those people who ‘had a speaking part’ and raised awareness of Hull Friends of the Earth and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust activity in the city that contributes to it being a nicer place for us all!

Third - thank you to Allan Davidson, Hull CC officer responsible for active travel, for attending and even extending the ride past East Park, taking us along the riverside route back in to Hull City Centre. His insights on the route were really useful, and his attendance shows the level of engagement we now have with the council.

Four - in taking us on the extended route, Allan showed us the efforts that have been made to connect up the P&O ferry terminal - you can now bike from Hull City Centre to Rotterdam City Centre, and the only place you need to stop and dismount is on the ferry; what other UK city can say that?!!! In the near future we’ll be making a case for how this can boost tourism in the city.

And finally - a massive thank you to CycHull member and HFoE volunteer Claire. She spoke to HullCC News following the ride, and had a piece published on their website. We’re really grateful for the plug that she gave CycHull! Read the article here.
